earbud detangler/cozy

this is just a little quickie i figured i should share… almost 2 years ago i posted the photo below on the wall of my facebook page of my non-tangled iphone cord, all dolled up in raspberry yarn.

january 2010

i just wanted to share this idea again, on the blog proper, as i have just  created a new set. while the other wrapping actually stood the test of time, the rubber on the ear pieces did not. so i’m cozy-ing up my new buds like this:

select a type of yarn that you’re okay living with and looking at for quite some time.

can you tell i couldn't choose a color? i went with variegated rainbow yarn.

tie a knot around the bottom of the earbud wire, and begin to knot your way down the wire, friendship-bracelet style. (tip: i secure my friendship bracelets and earbuds with a clipboard while i’m working on them.) when you get to the fork in the road (where the wire splits for two ears,) select one path and continue to knot to where the ear bud is. then go back and do the other segment with a new strand of yarn.

then be super happy that your phone cord won’t be a knotted mess when you try to answer a call, and it’s all stylie now!

oh how i love a good ombre!

i know you’ll get lots of comments and compliments — i’ve serioulsy taught a number of fellow whole foods shoppers how to do this while grocery shopping over the past coupla years. enjoy!

*consider purchasing new earbuds for friends and family and create these as custom holiday gifts, too!

digital art

i adore my iphone for many reasons, not all of them healthy. one of the more productive reasons is that it is allowing N to begin to make digital art.

surely, in her generation, she is likely to draw with pixels of light moreso than we ever did as kids. i mean, litebrite is as close as we came to light pictures, right?

i am a fan of digital art, myself. and it’s so fun to have N ask me if she can write and draw on my phone. we did a post on this same thing a little over a year ago, so i figured it was time to revisit this medium.

she loves picking her own colors and trying to create little scenes. the ones shown here are made my a free iphone app called scribble lite.

we also like colortilt. what are your favorite artsy iphone apps? comment (by clicking top left) to let us know! i’m always looking for a good free download.

pixel paintings

i’ve always been a digital art girl. being both a computer geek and an artist has really led me down a path where pixels may as well be paint, and i think my little one agrees. to pass the time on a four hour doctor’s office visit this morning (allergist takes forever!), i whipped out my trusty iphone.

not only does the iphone pass the time for me, but there are great free applications that entertain kids. my little lady loves to pop bubbles and bubble wrap on the iphone. (oh wait, i’m the one who likes to pop bubble wrap.) but most often N asks, “can i draw?” while holding up her “magic finger” out of which different colors pour onto the screen. with the scribble application, N drew a couple of gems:

then we opened the colour tilt application so that my daughter could hold the phone in her left hand and tilt it around while drawing with her right pointer finger. she loves to watch the colors change.

while it may seem like it’s not art if they’re not messy, digital art will be a bigger part of the lives of this generation than it has ever been. plus, parents, it does provide creative fun and artistic engagement for a toddler while in a doctor’s waiting room or other places where you can bring your little artist, but you can’t bring their big messes.
